We are turning the corner to spring, and I finally feel like I’m getting my health back on the right track. The holidays are a challenge for many people, myself included! There’s a lot of celebrating, eating out, traveling and other things that can derail your healthy eating and exercise habits. I’ve been buckling down and re-focusing my efforts on eating better, and it feels so good!
How I’m Getting My Eating Back on Track
Starting a few weeks ago, I began tracking my food intake. I use a helpful app to log every meal and snack, so I can see what my day looks like and any areas I need to work on.
Logging My Meals and Snacks
While it can seem tedious to track EVERYTHING, you can get so much helpful information! I can make sure I’m getting enough fruits and vegetables and fueling my body with healthy snacks (rather than the ones that might be more convenient!).
Revisiting Portion Control
Portion control is another aspect of healthy eating that can derail even the best laid plans. Over time, I find my portions start to creep up, and I know it’s time to bust out the measuring cups and spoons to get a better handle on what my portion size should be! The more you measure, you will be better able to eyeball the right size, and it will make your life a lot easier. 🙂
Getting Enough Fiber
The other thing I’ve been working on is getting enough fiber in my daily diet. I do my best to include as many fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes in my diet, but sometimes (especially when traveling!), I fall short. I recently picked up the Nature Made® Adult Fiber Gummies at CVS. Made with natural fruit flavors, each serving (3 gummies) contains 6 grams of dietary fiber!†
The assorted fruit flavors include cherry, strawberry, orange, lemon, sour apple and grape. I like that the colors are derived from natural sources as well (no synthetic dyes!). Additionally, the Nature Made Fiber Gummies do not contain preservatives, yeast or gluten.
Staying Hydrated
In addition to the above, I’m working on drinking enough fluids each day so I feel hydrated. I find when I don’t drink enough water, I can mistake hunger for thirst. 🙂 I’ve kept track of fluids each day (through an app) for a week or so to get back into the habit of hydrating. Each morning, I fill up my favorite water bottle with 3 glasses of water to get started!
Moving Every Day
While the winter weather in New England can sometimes put a damper on outside exercise, I try to do some sort of activity each day. My workout could include running, walking, dancing or doing an exercise video. I feel SO MUCH better when I move each day– both physically AND mentally!
