What Happened to the 10K?

RACING

Lately, it seems that all races are 5Ks or half marathons. It’s rare that you come across a 4 or 5-miler, let alone the rare 10K. I have never raced a 10K, and would really like to do so—especially in the end of July as a kind of time trial for my half marathon training.

When I started looking at Active.com and Cool Running, it appears that 10Ks are very few and far between. I know that people usually don’t like to run longer distances in the summer, but still a few might be nice.

I have always wanted to run the Tufts 10K in Boston, and maybe I will be able to make it this year (my husband always has to work on Columbus Day Sad smile). It looks like a really fun race and I definitely want to see what my time might be for the 10K distance.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the thrill and speed of a 5K and the challenge of the half marathon, I just wish there was something in between! That would be a new challenge in and of itself. It would also be an instant PR! Winking smile

Have you ever raced a 10K? Do you find that they are more rare these days?

Tell me about it! My fave race is a 10k. It has a bit more length to it which I love but still done quickly. To me it is the perfect race. I wish there were more of them!

I hate hate hate the 10k. 🙂 But I do enter them when they fit into my schedule because they are very challenging and make me a stronger runner. I did the Tufts 10k years ago and would love to do again. I am in the same situation as you , work has always gotten in the way.

I’ve never run a 10K but I’ve been looking for one in the fall for a while now and there just really aren’t any! There happens to be a 10K at the end of July really close to me but I wouldn’t be ready for it at that point.

Its a shame your not closer to the Toronto area, there are a lot of amajng 10ks at the end of the summer. Specifically the Toronto Women’s Run in August.
I do agree however, it seems the half marathon is the choice distance right now!!

I agree! They are fairly elusive! I love finding odd distance races through since it’s always an instant PR; something to feel good about. 😉

    If you’re close to NJ/PA there’s a Run the Bridge 10k in November: http://www.runthebridge.org/

I’ve never run a 10k either so if you find one we have to do it together!!!!

I find the same thing here too in NC. Just wanted to chime in and say that the Tufts 10k was my first 10k when I lived up in Boston and I loved it!!

I agree, we need more 10ks! A great summer 10k is the Beach to Beacon in Maine. It is always the first weekend in August…just prior to the good old Falmouth Road Race in MA.

I have been dying to run Beach to Beacon–Joan stayed with us back in the day when she came down for the FRR! 😉 I’ve heard it’s beautiful. Unfortunately this year, I am running the FRR so I probably won’t make it. 🙁 Are you running it?

One year you will have to make the trip to Maine. I live in Portland, ME now so the race is just around the corner for me. I will be running the Beach to Beacon and Falmouth this year. Maybe I’ll see you at Falmouth!!

I run the St. Patricks Day 10k in Holyoke MA and it is a block party with a race in the middle of it. The Harvard Pilgrim (which was just run) finishes in Gilette Stadium which seems cool to do once. I like how a 10k is not a full all out of breath sprint that a 5k is. I agree they are hard to find and when my plan calls for a “10k tuneup race” I will run a 10k loop near my house as a time trial.

That’s so bizarre about there not being any 10ks there. Here (in Germany) that is the most popular race distance! You could do one every weekend if you wanted, as well as plenty of half and full marathons, of course. But we have relatively few 5k’s.
So, that means…come on over Jess and run with me!

There are a TON of 5ks, but I’m with you…I’d like to see more 10, 12, even 15Ks organized.

Yep, still waiting to run my first 10K, and wishing there were more offered around here. The Tufts one looks great, but I’m running a half the following weekend, and looking to PR, so no 10K the week before for me. Hope you’re able to do it this year!

Forgot to add – I know this post is about 10Ks, but will you be at a point in your training that you could run the Blessing at the end of the month?

I wish Michelle, but this low iron thing has really kicked my butt in terms of how I feel training. In another few weeks, I think I should feel back up to par. We’ll see! I’ve heard great things about that race–it must be so hot though!!

It is usually pretty hot, but it’s so much fun (amazing crowd support), it’s totally worth it!

i just ran my first 10k last month and i have another coming up in the fall. i enjoyed it far more than i do 5k’s…it felt less chaotic! my first half-marathon will be in october, i’m curious about which distance i’ll end up prefering afterwards…

We have quite a few 10K’s in this area, though they are fewer and farther between than 5K’s and half marathons. I appreciated the fact that they had one as part of the Illinois Marathon festivities because I wanted a bigger challenge than a 5K but knew I wasn’t ready for a half. Plus, the 5K is run the night before and I wanted to run on the “main” race day.

Hmm, we seem to have lots of 10k’s here in Vancouver. Maybe us Canadians like our 10k distance! I like the distance but would rather run a half I think…
