Call me crazy, but I am seriously considering signing up for the Warrior Dash on June 9 of next year in Thompson, Connecticut. After seeing a few pictures of fellow bloggers jumping over flames, I started to do some research. While I don’t consider myself an adrenaline junkie per se, the idea of jumping over flames does sound kind of fun and makes for a great race picture!
The Warrior Dash is a 5K course that entails a number of different obstacles. Highlights of the Thompson, Connecticut course include maneuvering over giant cargo nets, rappelling down a ravine, and hurdling over flames.
Rules for the Obstacles are as follows:
- Completion of all Warrior Dash obstacles may be hazardous. It is the responsibility of the participant to leave the course if they are unable to complete an obstacle.
- Course officials are stationed at every obstacle for participant safety.
- It is the responsibility of the participant to notify course officials if the participant feels their safety is in danger or they are injured.
- Any participant who receives assistance from any spectator or non-competitor on any obstacle shall be ineligible to receive an award.
Sweet, where do I sign up? I am a bit intimidated by the obstacles, but at the same time I feel like it would be a really fun way to challenge myself.Β The Warrior Dash is definitely something that is outside of my comfort zone, not your average weekend 5K.
So what do you get for completing a Warrior Dash? You get a great t-shirt, a Viking helmet medal and a fuzzy Viking helmet. Oh, and a free beer at the finish. Hmmm, definitely not your average race swag either. Needless to say, this is a definite possibility for the 2012 race calendar, and will most likely make an appearance on the racing bucket list.
Anyone else interested? Have you ever done a Warrior Dash? If so, what was your experience?
A fuzzy Viking helmet? That is hilarious! I’m not sure I would sign up, but I would love to hear about your experience if you do it! π
You can live vicariously through my race experience Laura–I’ll even take a picture in the fuzzy Viking hat! π
I have been secretly wanting to do one of these races, but I don’t know if I could physically do it. But maybe if I can finish a half marathon I could finish a warrior dash… do I see another racecation in our future?
Definitely making the trip, now we have you, Clarke, and Samantha on board. who else is game?
My area is having one of these next September too — that’s 9 months out, maybe I can be ready by then? π They just look so awesome! Your clothes/shoes would get ruined though, and I read that you should duct-tape your shoes on or else they’ll get lost in the mud. Fun!! (Or miserable, hehe.)
Katherine, that is such a great idea about the duct tape for your shoes– I am going to put that on the list of necessary supplies for race day! I think you should definitely do one too! Nine months is plenty of time to prepare π
I’ve done 2 and they are BIG fun. I am not fast at all, and I did one of them half walking with a friend who doesn’t run as much as I do. I skipped 1 hurdle in the first WD, and I did every.thing. in the second. The atmosphere is AWESOME, so go expecting a good time. Also, if you’re feeling froggy, lots of people show up in crazy costumes. GO SIGN UP!!
Thanks for the encouragement! It’s on the calendar π Sounds like you had a blast–hope I do too!
I did the Warrior Dash in MD last year and I definitely recommend doing the earliest heat possible. We waited until the afternoon of the second day and we had to spend the whole time trying to keep our shoes on. The mud got kind of… tricky as time went on haha. It was fun, but if I did it again I’d make sure I went on day 1 π
