Last month I found out about a super cool, mom-invented (of course!) car-seat friendly coat: the Cozywoggle. Even though the temperatures haven’t gotten that cold yet here in New England, many of us have already seen the articles circulating about car seat safety and thick winter coats.
Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages 2-14 and putting a child in a car seat with a thick winter jacket will seriously affect the car seat’s ability to protect your child in the event of an accident. According to the Car Seat Lady, the average puffy jacket or snow suit adds about 4 inches of slack to your car seat straps.
The car seat straps we thought were snug aren’t so snug when we get in an accident and the jacket or snowsuit is compressed all the way. There is now quite a bit of room for our child to be moved around in the seat, potentially dislodged, and injured. So, what do you do?
There are a few different options for keeping your car seat safe in colder temperatures. You can read about many of them on the Car Seat Lady. I decided to try out one of the newest car-seat friendly coats, the Cozywoggle!

How is the Cozywoggle Different from a Regular Coat?
At first glance, the Cozywoggle looks like a regular winter coat. If you look closely, however, you will see a zipper that runs from the wrist, down the side of the jacket, to the waist. There is a zipper on each side.
Aside from the zippers, the jacket is a stylish little coat! The jacket is fleece-lined and made from wind/water-resistant polyester, so it’s warm and will hold up to the winter elements!
Using the Cozywoggle
Take your child out to the car with the jacket fully zipped everywhere. Before you strap your child into the car seat, unzip the zippers on each side of the jacket and take your child’s wrists out of the sleeves.
Pull the back of the jacket up behind the child’s head and over the back of the car seat. The coat will now resemble a poncho. When it’s time to take the child out of the car, remove from the seat and zip them back up! The following is a great video tutorial on how to use the Cozywoggle:
