Last week, I read a story about a husband and wife team who ran the Atlanta marathon in Georgia, and both won first place in their respective divisions. My first reaction was “Wow!” My second reaction– I don’t think I would EVER convince my husband to run a marathon (nor would either of us win)! The story did get me thinking about running partners.
My husband is a natural-born athlete. He is just one of those people who seems to be able to try a sport and pick it up right away. He is built like a cross-country runner, and he would be an AWESOME distance runner if he ever decided to train like one. Although we have run a few races together, running is not a workout he would choose if given any other athletic option, with the exception of maybe water polo.
I sometimes try to bribe him to go for a run with me on the weekends. It’s always nice to have a little company-especially for long runs (even if it’s just for a few miles). For some reason or another, I am usually rebuffed. Maybe it’s better that way. I wonder if we did run together regularly, would it get to be competitive? If he was a runner, would we be secretly checking Garmins and comparing splits? I am competitive by nature, so it’s probably best we don’t run together! Do you run with your spouse or significant other?
My husband and I run together 2 days a week. He’s a better runner than me and is gracious to go my speed when we run. But he’s always urging me to run with him so that he has company and I’m challenged and pushed even more. I have a love/hate relationship with it.
My running is definitely improved and we are getting a little bit more one-on-one time together, which is nice.
Now to run a marathon together and both win??? YIKES! That would be cool. We’re trying to find a 5-10K we can do together soon.
Christine, that’s awesome! It is so nice to have one-on-one time–and the bonus of a faster pace! You should definitely do a race together–let me know how it goes!
I keep trying to get my husband to run with me – but he doesn’t “like” running 🙁
I know–I keep trying! 😉
