If you are a parent and you run, I can pretty much guarantee that you have had a run like the one I am about to describe at some point in your parenting career. Let me set the scene…
I am running at the YMCA while my older son is at preschool and my younger son is in the Y’s Primetime babysitting program (a great benefit of the Y= free babysitting while you run!). The schedule dictates a one mile warm up, three miles at steady state, and a one mile cool down.

I am definitely having one of those runs where I really just want it to be over already. At 3.65 (to be exact) the worker from childcare comes to get me at the treadmill and tells me that my youngest has a nice little present in his diaper that I need to come take care of.
As I heave an exasperated sigh and take my sweaty self off the treadmill, I am thinking “Couldn’t you have just held it for 10 minutes longer?” Definitely not getting the Mom of the Year award for that thought! Seriously though, I trudged down, changed the diaper and trudged back up to finish the rest of my five mile workout.
I will admit I was a little stiff when I hopped back on the treadmill to finish the run. I think this will help me when I hit the last mile of my half-marathon in March!
Do you have a run interrupted you would like to share?
I can always relate to your posts! I just had this happen to me yesterday… except that I was in a group class at the Y, rather than a run, so I missed about 5-10 minutes of it. What was most frustrating is that my daughter was really sad to see me leave again, and they told me she pulled another kids’ hair right after I left. Argh! We can’t get kicked out of the Y playroom! 🙂
Ha! If it isn’t one thing, it’s another! My son was upset when I had to leave again too 🙁 Luckily I only had about ten minutes left!
That stinks! Literally :).
Since I run outside a lot pushing my son in the jogger, I have had many interrupted runs. I have to give him his water, more of his snack, a toy or I need to put his mittens back on his hands or fix his hat so it’s not covering his eyes, haha…I could go on and on. It’s rare that I have a run that is constant running without at least one or two stops.
I agree Kristen! 😉 Sounds like you are a seasoned veteran with the interrupted runs. I guess if anything it’s a little rest break!
Yes, it’s a state law here that they can’t change diapers because they aren’t DCYF certified. Luckily, it doesn’t happen too often! I love our Y too and have thought about applying for a job there!
