Long Run on the Cape

GEAR

The verdict is in on the compression socks–they worked! I have virtually no residual soreness in the legs and feet after my 13 mile long run this morning. I was originally supposed to do miles 10-12 at 8:20 or better, but that was just not happening this morning. I ran 5 yesterday at about 4:30 and then ran this morning at 8:30, go figure that my legs were a little less than speedy this morning, 18 miles in less than 24 hours will do that to you. It was a beautiful fall morning in Falmouth with a cool and crisp 51 degrees  at the start of my long run.

One thing that i love about the running community is that we are  a pretty friendly bunch. Every runner I passed this morning gave a quick hello or a wave. I love people that can still manage to be friendly while logging miles insanely early on a weekend morning! Today’s run was also the inaugural run for my newly acquired Fuel Belt. I have always preferred carrying a Fuel Belt water bottle to wearing something around my waist while running, but running for two hours holding a water bottle will most definitely give you a cramp in your wrist (I know this from first-hand experience!).

So when I saw Fuel Belts at TJ Maxx on a shopping excursion a couple of weeks ago, I decided to give one a try. I figured since I only paid $10 for it (they usually sell for about $24), I wouldn’t be broken-hearted if I didn’t end up loving it. I got the one with for 6 oz bottles and a small pocket for carrying my Jelly Belly sport beans. It actually worked pretty well–the only thing that is a little awkward is getting the small bottles out and back in easily while running. I think I will have to work on that one!

Great blog J! Of course I love to read about Falmouth and the bike path- especially at this time of year. I don’t love my Fuel Belt but have gotten good at jamming the bottles in and out of that thing as they slosh around.

I’m not a mom, but really empathize with your reasons for running and obstacles as you train for new goals. Looking forward to more postings!

Thanks Megan! I totally hear you on the Fuel Belt–I think it’s a little awkward trying to ram the bottles back into the belt while trying to maintain your pace. I think I just need practice. I enjoy reading your blog a lot too–I can live vicariously through your world travels 🙂

I just purchased compression sleeves for my legs (I hope I don’t regret not getting the socks- darn). Glad to hear you liked them. I can’t wait to test mine out!

As for mommy guilt, I hear you! My weekday runs are on the treadmill at 4:45 since that is my only time…

Let me know what you think after you try them out! Good for you for getting up so early to run–there is something so peaceful in the early morning hours (read– only quiet time of the day). 🙂
