What Running Is For Me
Running has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I don’t know what I would do without it! It’s my therapy, my stress outlet, a way to stay in shape, a positive behavior to model for my children and so much more.
I look back at my years of running and it’s like a topographical map– there are peaks and valleys. The peaks are great races or weeks I felt invincible on the run and the valleys are times I’ve briefly fallen out of love with running or dealing with injury. But you know what? I’m still running!
As I approach 40, it’s been one of the most consistent things I’ve done in my life. It’s been there for me in so many different ways. I originally started out running to stay in shape for other sports, but it’s now my favorite sport. Instead of running for the physical benefits (which are nice!), I run much more for the mental release now. It’s pretty much the way I stay sane parenting 3 active young boys!
Being a parent is hard. I don’t need to convince anyone of that fact. There are many great days, but there are also exasperating ones! Running is always my go-to when I just need to get out of the house and get away. Even if I only have 20 minutes to run, I always feel a million times better when I’m done. There is a combined feeling of exhaustion and elation that is so worth it and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
But that’s just my story, and yours may or may not be similar. One of the best things about our running community is that we come from all different places, in different shapes and sizes, and with different stories.
