I’m Jessica, mom to three crazy (but very lovable) young boys, and an adopted Southern hound. Life gets crazy and hectic at times, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I’ve made my share of mistakes, and it hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve managed to go from a stay at home mom to a work at home professional blogger and digital influencer. It’s given me the ability to be at home with my kids, while at the same time earning an income and some sweet perks for our family!
I started my blogging journey back in 2011 right after my second son was born. I had left my job as a pharmaceutical representative after the birth of my first son; and as a stay at home mom, I found myself longing for more of a connection to the outside world and validation that it was okay not to be a “perfect” mom and that sometimes “good enough” is just fine and much better for your mental health! I really didn’t like my job at all, so it was a natural transition to be at home with my son.
While my husband supported the decision, he was apprehensive about the loss of my income. I was making a good salary, and that was hard to walk away from, but I knew in my heart that it wasn’t what I wanted to do and that staying home with my child was more important to me. I loved being a stay at home mom, but I would be lying if I didn’t say that I sometimes felt isolated and longing for adult interaction and intellectual stimulation.
Since I had started running to get back into shape and for an outlet for parenting stress (and some “me time”), I started blogging about running. I wrote short snippets of my everyday life and running passions. I remember how excited I was when I got my first free pair of shoes to review on the blog! 🙂 Over time, however, I started to realize that if I really want to take my blog and social media business to the next level, I couldn’t just work for free items (you can only have so much running gear!).
I grew frustrated when my blog traffic would refuse to budge and I wondered how I could get paid in money for all of the work I was putting into my blog. I started to do A LOT of research and read whatever I could get my hands on related to blogging and social media. I found Facebook groups to join, and I began to network with other bloggers in my area. I loved experimenting with new tactics I learned, and I was quickly able to determine what worked and what didn’t. I’ve amassed quite a bit of knowledge from this trial and error method over the last six years!
Eventually, I learned how to pitch myself to blogging collectives, and I started reaching out to different public relations firms and applying for relevant sponsored posts and social media campaigns. I’ve learned how to really sell my blog and what I can deliver to both brands and my readers, and I love it!
I’ve developed my online writing skills and started to cover other topics that are also a large part of my life– things like healthy recipes, staying active with your family, family travel and more. I still pinch myself when I get a paycheck for publishing a post!
I have had wonderful opportunities that don’t just include monetary compensation, but travel, accommodations, dining out, sports-related gear, electronics and more. It’s allowed me to provide my family with experiences we might not be able to afford were it not for my blogging job.
I’d love to help you start your journey too! Maybe you want to quit your office job or want to work it part-time, or maybe you just want to get some great perks from writing about your hobbies or passions. There are really so many different ways you can go with a blog, and it doesn’t have to require a degree in computer science!
