How I Take Time for My Health!

PARENTING

Things I Do to Take Care of My Health

Why is it that we almost always remember to give our kids their vitamins, make sure they eat healthy snacks, schedule well visits and dental visits; but we often forget to do these things for ourselves? It’s a question I ask myself a lot, but I will admit that I’ve gotten MUCH better about taking care of myself– it only took me 3 kids to get there! 🙂

How I Make Time for My Health

One thing I did was make sure that I took some time to schedule important health appointments or things I need to do to keep myself healthy. Here’s my list of things I do to help take care of myself (including taking daily vitamins!):

I Schedule a Yearly Physical

Most of us diligently schedule well-visits for our children, but we forget to schedule our own annual physicals! Checking in with your physician, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner yearly can help you stay on top of potential health issues. I make sure to make my next yearly checkup when I’m in the office, so I don’t forget to do it later!

I Schedule Dental Appointments (Preferably Twice a Year!)

Like the well-visits you schedule for the kids, I am guessing you are also timely with scheduling twice yearly dental cleanings. Make sure that when you schedule your kids’ visits, you schedule your own as well.

I Have My Eyes Checked Every Other Year

Glaucoma runs in my family, so I make sure to get my eyes checked every two years. Your vision can change from year to year, so it’s a good idea to see how you’re doing and whether or not you might need glasses or a change in your prescription. Thankfully I haven’t had been diagnosed yet with glaucoma, but vision has definitely been changing every few years!

I Get a Yearly Skin Check

My stepfather passed away a few years ago from melanoma, and since I live near the beach and spent a lot of time in the sun as a child, I make an effort to get a full body skin check each year. Melanoma and skin cancers can be treated effectively if they are caught very early, so don’t wait until it’s too late! It’s okay to feel fearful and afraid that they might find something suspicious, just remember it’s so much easier to treat if caught early!

I Take My Vitamins

I didn’t start regularly taking vitamins until right before I got pregnant with my first son 9 years ago (eek!)! I now make sure to take my vitamins each night. Although I am not pregnant, I still take a prenatal vitamin with folate because I am of child-bearing age, and life doesn’t always go as planned! 🙂
