Let’s be real—between work, kids, and trying to get five minutes to yourself, staying on track with healthy eating can feel like one more thing on your never-ending to-do list. If you’re a busy mom over 40 (especially if you are following the FASTer Way to Fat Loss® (FWTFL), the key to your success lies in one word: prep.
Here’s how to make healthy meal prep easier, faster, and more sustainable so you can stay consistent and live your healthy life.
1. Start With Your Weekly Plan
In the FWTFL program, each day has a different nutritional focus—low-carb days (2), regular macro days, and intermittent fasting every day. Knowing what each day requires helps you plan better and avoid last-minute drive-thru regrets!
Pro Tip: Print or screenshot your macro calendar at the start of the week. Build your meal ideas around that.
2. Pick Your Proteins, Complex Carbs, and Healthy Fat
Don’t overcomplicate it. For most moms, simplicity = consistency.
Example:
- Proteins: Grilled chicken, hard-boiled eggs, pork, tofu, lean beef
- Veggies: Roasted broccoli, raw bell pepper strips, green beans, cut-up veggies
- Carb (for regular macro days): Sweet potatoes, cooked quinoa, oats, brown rice
- Fat: Avocado or olive oils, avocados, walnuts
Mix and match to create bowls, salads, wraps, or snacks throughout the week.
3. Healthy Meal Prep Smart, Not Perfect!
You don’t have to spend your whole Sunday cooking. Aim for 30–45 minutes of intentional prep.
What to do:
- Wash and cut veggies once per week (I do it on Sundays)
- Pre-cook proteins and healthy carbs (the Instant Pot and Air Fryer are great for this!)
- Portion out healthy snacks (nuts, hummus, fruit)
- Make one simple dressing or sauce to jazz up your bowls, salads, and wraps.
Remember: Done is better than perfect!
4. Lean on Healthy Meal Prep Shortcuts (No Guilt!)
It’s totally fine to grab pre-cut veggies, rotisserie chicken, or frozen cauliflower rice. This isn’t cheating—this is working smart.
Keep staples like canned tuna, frozen berries, nut butter, and protein powder on hand for quick meals.
5. Use Intermittent Fasting to Simplify Your Healthy Meal Prep
You’re likely already doing intermittent fasting as part of FWTFL. That means one less meal to prep!
Make your first meal count: think protein + fiber + healthy fats.
Go-to example: Eggs + sautéed spinach + avocado, or a smoothie with protein powder, almond milk, chia seeds, and frozen berries.
6. Make It Family Friendly
No need to cook separate meals. Choose base ingredients that work for the whole family. For example:
- Taco night? If it’s a low-net carb day, you do lettuce wraps; they do tortillas.
- Pasta night? If it’s a low-net carb day, you do zoodles or spaghetti squash; they do regular noodles.
- Everyone wins.
Final Thoughts on Healthy Meal Prep for Busy Weekdays
Meal prep doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little strategy and a lot of grace, you can fuel your body, support your fat loss goals, and still have energy left over for the rest of your busy life.
Remember, mama—you’re not just feeding your body, you’re fueling your future.
