I have always been a sucker for children’s books. Even though we now have access to e-books for children too, I will never become a convert. There is something about the tactile nature of turning the pages of a book that makes me remember my own childhood.
- The Teacher’s Pet by Anica Mrose Rissi and illustrated by Zachariah OHora is a whimsical story about a class pet (tadpole) that grows up to be a hippo! My pre-schooler loved this one because it reminded him of their classroom pets: a guinea pig and a frog named Gilly.
- Fall is For School written and illustrated by Robert Neubecker. I LOVED the illustrations in this book. This is a sequel to the author’s book Winter is for Snow.
- The Scariest Book Ever, written and illustrated by Bob Shea. This picture book is super cute and perfect for younger children who want to get into the spirit of Halloween, but don’t want anything too frightening!
- Super Saurus Saves Kindergarten, written by Deborah Underwood and illustrated by Ned Young. Super Saurus is a young, creative dinosaur who is on a mission to save his class from the evil genius Zorgo.
- Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker, written and illustrated by Shelley Johannes. This is a great book for older elementary students, as it deals with a spunky third-grader who is dealing with the challenge of maintaining friendships and other school-age issues.
- Dog Days of School, written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Brian Biggs. Dog Days of School is about a boy named Charlie who thinks his dog has it made, so he gets his wish of becoming a dog! This humorous tale shows kids why you should be careful what you wish for!
- Ready for School Murphy? written and illustrated by Brendan Murphy. If your child is having a hard time getting excited about school, this is the book you need. It’s a cute story about Murphy who makes up creative excuses for why he can’t go to school, only to find out at the end of the story that it’s Saturday!
