One of the things I have made a concerted effort to do over the past few years is to make sure that our dishes and cooking ware is greener and healthier for us to use. While many of the dishes you see at big-box retailers and online are great looking, they are often made in China and have no certification that the paints used are lead and cadmium-free.
If you think about how often you use your plates, it’s pretty scary to think of them containing lead and cadmium. What happens when you put them in the microwave or dishwasher? Scary! When I started researching dinnerware that is lead-free and cadmium-free, I stumbled upon Fiesta Dinnerware.
I always associated Fiestaware with my grandmother, because she had such an extensive collection! What I didn’t know at the time is that it is made in the USA and is lead and cadmium free. Fiestaware for the win! It had me at made in the USA and lead and cadmium-free, but I also love the funky colors and the fact that it has a 5-year chip resistant warranty (huge bonus!). I promptly bought myself 6 place settings of Fiestaware and have never looked back. It’s microwave and dishwasher safe, and it’s held up very well!
If you are interested in purchasing Fiestaware, you can find it at most department stores (I got mine from Macy’s), specialty shops, online, and at www.homerlaughlin.com.
30 Something Mother Runner received 4 square bowls from Homer Laughlin China (maker of Fiesta Dinnerware). I personally purchased six place settings of my own, because I truly believe in the quality and safety of this dinnerware.
I adore Fiestaware! I have this geeky goal to eventually get a rainbow of their colors for every place setting. I’ve got like three so far 😉
There’s just so many fun colors to choose from! I am looking forward to adding some more accent colors to my collection 🙂
question: I am very interested in fiestaware as well but don’t see where it is mentioned that they are cadmium free? I only see the
‘lead free’.
Thanks, Moni
Hi Moni, here is a site, I can’t find it right now on their site, but I believe it was also in the public relations information they sent me. It may be worth a call or email though to double check! 🙂 http://www.safbaby.com/lead-and-cadmium-in-dinnerware/
received email from fiesta today: Cadmium Statement
The Homer Laughlin China Company knowingly uses encapsulated cadmium containing pigments to create some of the vitrified Fiesta Glazes. While the existence of cadmium can be detected using X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis (XRF), XRF is not an approved test method to determine the leachability of cadmium in ceramic dinnerware. XRF does indicate what metals are present in the sample. There is no threshold value (ppm) for cadmium by any state or federal agency for ceramic dinnerware using XRF.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and California Proposition 65 use a specific test method with threshold values (ppm) to determine the leachability of cadmium using an acidic solution to leach the metal from the food use side of the dinnerware.
The Homer Laughlin China Company regularly utilizes testing laboratories to determine the cadmium leachability of the new glaze colors and checks existing glaze colors to verify compliance with the requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and California Proposition 65. The Homer Laughlin China Company is in full compliance with the cadmium leachability requirements for ceramic dinnerware required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and California Proposition 65.
Thanks for sharing the info! 🙂
There is cadmium present in Fiesta dinnerware. LeadFree America tested it and it came up with 485pp. Bummer!
🙁 Amy. Can you give me the citation from that test, so I can include it in the post? Thanks!
