I am going to start this article by saying: “No, I’m not pregnant again!” 🙂 One of the topics I get asked about the most is running during pregnancy. While I did not run throughout my first and second pregnancies, I ran until about 22 weeks with the third. The most important piece of advice I can give you is to “LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.”
Some women have no issues running during pregnancy, while others can’t even stomach (pun intended!) the idea. Talk to your doctor and do what you feel is right for you and baby. Based upon my time running while pregnant with #3, I put together a list of items that are helpful for the pregnant runner:
Pregnancy Support Belt
With number 3, my baby belly popped out A LOT sooner, and it definitely became an issue when running. I loved the Gabriela Support Belt, because it was comfortable, easy to put on (simple velcro closure), and it helped support my abdomen so it didn’t bump up and down so much or strain my back.
Compression Socks for Pregnant Feet
Many runners use compression socks or sleeves for long runs, half marathons, and marathons. Guess what? Your feet will swell during pregnancy (at least for most of us by the end of your pregnancy journey!), and compression socks can be a huge help!
When you’re on the run, you have more blood accumulating in your lower legs which can exacerbate existing swelling. Compression socks can help reduce the swelling and keep your blood flowing well in your lower legs. BONUS: if you are planning on sitting for a long time on a road trip or flight, compression socks will be your best friend!
Nathan Insulated QuickShot Plus Flask
Hydration is HUGE when you’re pregnant, and you may find yourself getting thirsty even on shorter runs. Also, later in pregnancy, dehydration can cause you to experience more Braxton Hicks contractions. This small hand held holds 10 oz, of liquid, and it’s the perfect size for a shorter run. It also has a great little pocket for stashing your keys, ID, or a small snack in case hanger strikes!
For Two Fitness Maternity Apparel
My go to workout wear was from For Two Fitness. I loved their yoga-style pant with a panel that you can pull up or fold down, depending on how far along you are. They are super comfy and wash up well after repeated uses! I also loved the racer back tanks that have ruching on the side to allow it to grow along with your expanding belly! They are super comfy and very flattering.
