As a professional blogger, there are certain questions that pop up over and over again in blogging groups and in individual conversations with my coaching clients. One of these questions is “Do I need a blogger media kit?” Yes is the answer I give, and the follow-up question is “How do I make one and what do I need to put in it?”
A Blogger Media Kit will Help Separate You From the Competition
In my opinion, a media kit will most definitely set you apart from the rest of the competition when you start pitching brands since it’s gotten to be A LOT more competitive than it was when I started over 6 years ago! I liken it to a résumé when you apply for a job. You send over a résumé and the employer takes a quick look at your information to see if you might be a good fit.
If the answer is yes, they move forward to the next step. It’s a brief, clear and concise sell sheet. It also conveys that you are a professional blogger and you know your influence, audience and what you have to offer potential collaborators.
Even if you don’t have a lot of followers yet, you still have influence, so make sure you create a media kit. You never know when a brand or agency will approach you or when you will want to make your first pitch! In fact, many brands prefer working with newer bloggers that are offering fresh content and a different perspective.
Believe it or not, it’s not hard to create a professional media kit on your own. There are templates you can by online and on Etsy, but making one on your own ensures that it reflects your blog’s brand and aesthetic. It doesn’t take more than an hour to great a beautiful media kit that you can start sending out with your pitches!
I recently launched my e-book (“How to Create a Professional Media Kit with BONUS: How to Pitch Like a Pro”) that shows you exactly how to create your own media kit with $0 out of pocket, along with my insider tips for pitching brands (including how to find out who to pitch and sample e-mail pitch templates!).
