Since I have a family member who is battling Stage IV skin cancer, our family is super vigilant about sun protection. My children are very fair-skinned, so we go through a lot of sunscreen during the course of the year! I also wear sunscreen when I run. One thing I am very careful about is the ingredients in the sunscreen I apply to my kids’ skin. I only use products containing mineral-based blocking compounds like zinc–not products containing avobenzone or other chemical blockers. The great thing about physical blockers like zinc is that the protection starts right away (no need to wait a half hour), and it stays on really well!
I recently had the opportunity to try some sunscreen from Block Island Organics, and I am excited to say that this will be my go to sunscreen for the summer. I love small, family-owned companies like Block Island Organics, even more when they make great products! I tried the SPF 40 for Face and Body. It’s non-comedogenic, lightweight, and water-resistant. It rubbed in really well–something that can be challenging with physical blockers. I used it on myself and the boys. They also make a baby sunscreen (SPF 30) and a sun repair lotion.
