It’s been a while, so I knew I was due for one—yes, a running interruption due to a necessary diaper change. Yesterday, I decided to work out in the afternoon, after my older son finished preschool. Since my 2-year-old is usually pretty regular and gets his business done in the morning, I knew I was flirting with danger when I chose to hit the YMCA in the afternoon.
It’s always a stressful moment when you see the woman in the purple shirt approaching your treadmill out of the corner of your eye. Your breathing quickens and you glance furtively to the adjoining treadmills to see if there could possibly be another parent there. I hope it’s not mine, I hope it’s not mine you say to yourself.
Yesterday, I was exactly 1.59 miles into a 7 mile progression run when I got the visit from the lady in purple. At least it wasn’t in the middle or towards the end, I did a speed work-worthy diaper change and finished out the workout. Ironically, right after I started back, the poor woman next to me was summoned. Apparently children have a fondness for soiling diapers at the Y!
All things considered, it was a great run. I did a 1 mile w/u and then 5 miles at 8:27, 8:19, 8:12, 8:00 and 7:47. I felt good at the end and probably could have continue, but I did a 1 mile c/d and called it a day! I really, really LOVE progression runs—probably because I am usually a negative splitter over distance…
Every time I see the ladies walk out of the child care room at the Y I totally do the same thing! My son loves to wait until we are there to go also. And there’s nothing like leaning over a kid on the floor changing their diaper (because our Y has no good place to change lol) dripping with sweat! I’m glad it happened early on for you and you got a great run in.
I used to always dread when one of the gym persons would walk in the workout area in fear that they were summoning me because of a diaper or mild freakout. Now it seems like so long ago.
Yes, I know that feeling. Whenever one of the women from the childcare room walks in, all the moms look over, wondering if she’s there for them….. Glad you were able to still get a good run in!
