Most likely tendonitis. Dr. Ferguson could quite possibly be the sweetest orthopedist out there. I dragged both kids along with me to my 12:30 appointment. Those with kids know that this is not exactly the prime hour for taking your children to a doctor’s appointment!
The boys were very cooperative though, and I am so proud of them. The only toys we brought along were two coloring books and some crayons. This occupied them while they were not being entertained by the x-ray and office staff.
After checking out the x-rays of my right hip, Dr. Ferguson said the diagnosis is most likely tendonitis, either of the psoas or the rectus femoris. He said that I should not run for another month, and hopefully that will resolve the issue.
He said there was a very outside chance that it could be a labral tear, but he really didn’t think that was the issue. If after a month, the pain is still there, we can discuss doing an MRI.
Since physical therapy twice a week is pretty much not going to happen with the two kids, I can stretch and do strengthening exercises on my own. As for activity, Dr. Ferguson said that I should start with some swimming and then after a couple of weeks, I can add in the elliptical if I don’t have any discomfort.
I felt a sense of relief after the appointment. I am glad it is not a stress fracture. I can deal with tendonitis. A month won’t be THAT long, and I think it will go by pretty fast. I am just going to take the ibuprofen if I feel discomfort and wish and hope and pray that after a month, it’s gone! Hopefully, you can all bear with me for one more month—then I will be back to updating on training and racing—I promise!
This morning, I am headed out on my road trip to Virginia Beach. I am SO EXCITED to be headed for a long weekend away—it’s actually my first weekend away from the boys. Although I will miss them tons, it is a much needed break,
It would be great to be able run the Shamrock Half, but the next best ting will be being an unofficial coach to Michaela. I love watching races and can’t wait to get dressed up in my St. Patrick’s Day outfit and cheer as loud as I can for all the runners. The temps will be warm, and I will be rocking my Team Sparkle skirt!
Who is racing this weekend?
praying it just HEALS HEALS HEALS as Ive been there at the PT thing with one child—and it was a carnival ride.
xoxo
Thanks so much for the prayers! 🙂
Good luck on healing, I hope your pain disappears after a month!
Thanks Toni! I hope so too! 😉
Glad you have a diagnosis, and that it’s something relatively manageable. And yes, I know exactly what you mean about dragging the kids to appointments – always a victory when that goes smoothly! Does your PT offer early morning appointments? I’m able to get in at 6:30 or 7am, which means I don’t have to bring the kids. But I guess if you know what exercises to do, you can just do them at home. Hope the month goes quickly for you! Have fun spectating the race! I’ll be racing the New Bedford Half on Sunday – looking like a beautiful day for it!
Thanks Michelle! I can’t wait to hear how the NB Half goes– I will be thinking about you. Good luck!! 🙂
I just recently found your blog and am a 30 something newbie mother runner (first running 5k in three weeks). I’m glad you got an answer. Things are always more manageable when you know what it is. Good luck!
Thanks so much for stopping by and reading Libby– and for the kind words. Good luck on your 5k, watch out racing is addictive! 🙂
Great news! Here’s to fast healing!! =)
Thanks Heidi! 🙂
Enjoy your weekend away!
Thanks Heather! It was awesome! 🙂
Hang in there, Jess. The month will fly by! I know how frustrating it can be not to be able to run, I’ve had a herniated disk in my back that has prohibited me from running for the better part of a year.
Thanks Jaci! So sorry about the herniated disk–how painful! Do you have to have surgery on it?
Phew, not a stress fracture, that is a huge relief, huh? Even though your diagnosis means no running for another month, you continue to have a positive attitude about things and honestly, that’s half the battle when dealing with an injury! Have an awesome time this weekend!
I know, it is! So jealous of your mini FFA get together this past weekend 😉 Hope you enjoyed all the nice weather!! 🙂
Glad to hear that it’s not a stress fracture. It stinks to have to sit out another month but hopefully that’s all it needs to get better. Have a great weekend!
Thanks Christine– I am really hoping this month does it. I miss running! 🙂
Take me with you – you can do the talking and I will do the walking!
We would make quite the pair! 😉
Your attitude never ceases to amaze me – you are wonderfully positive!
Enjoy your road trip!
Awww, thanks Samantha! Had a FANTASTIC weekend in Virginia Beach. I am definitely going back to run it next year. 🙂
Hi! Glad you have a diagnosis, Just went through this after running the Phila Half and the pain did not improve with rest/NSAIDS. Finally, after my 2nd physical therapist, (She ONLY treats women) xray, MRI, Bone Scan we found it was my QL (Quadratus Lumborum). QL spasms cause the same symptoms you have above and is often misdiagnosed. It’s a small muscle that connects the pelvis to the spine and often becomes a problem with Mother Runners! If you are not feeling relief after resting you may want to look into this. 🙂
Thanks for the info Dawn–if it doesn’t get better, I will have to look into that! 🙂
Happy to hear that you have a diagnosis that it is not a stress fracture. Good to see that your spirits are still positive. At least you missed winter running and will be able to enjoy the nice April running weather!!
And I am raceing the Holyoke St Patrick’s Day 10k tis weekend.
have fun cheering this weekend (without kids)! Try not to think of them too much
Thank you! I am so happy too–what winter running? 😉 Ha ha. I just miss running so much, can’t wait to be back at it. Hope the St. Patty’s Day 10k went well!!
Glad you know what is going on! Sending some major heal quickly vibes your way. Have a great time cheering this weekend!
Thanks!! I will take all the healing vibes I can get! 🙂
It is such a relief to have a diagnosis, isn’t it? So glad it’s not a stress fracture… one more month is very doable. Especially with some swimming and elliptical. You’ve got such a great attitude! Heal quickly, and enjoy spectating this weekend!
It IS a relief!! I am glad it isn’t a stress fx too, I really hope that another month takes care of the issue. Fingers crossed (and toes too!). 🙂
I just found your sight while searching hip tendonitis and can identify/commiserate with your diagnosis. My MRI also identified a labral tear. I’m hoping rest and ibuprofen with some core strengthening will allow me to lace up my sneakers ASAP and kick the tendonitis as well. I miss my runs desperately. Best of luck to speedy healing to you!
Awww, I am hoping you heal quickly Amy! It was about two and a half months for me, but I am back to running very small distances every other day!
What a relief it must be to have a diagnosis!! I agree with the others, what a great outlook and attitude you have – hoping with this rest it will heal fully and quickly!! (and THEN we will run together!!!)
