At 48, I’ve discovered that midlife is when the real transformation begins. As a special education teacher, I spend my days helping students unlock their potential and navigate challenges, work that requires both patience and resilience. At home, I’m busy raising three teenagers and tweens, each with their own unique personalities and ever-changing needs. I’m also a NASM Certified Personal Trainer.
My relationship with fitness has evolved dramatically over the years, especially as I’ve navigated perimenopause and the unique challenges women face in their 40s and 50s. In high school and college, I was an athlete who understood the thrill of competition and the discipline of training.
For much of my adult life, I was a dedicated runner, finding peace and endurance on the pavement. But a few years ago, I made the switch to strength training—and it’s been a game-changer for both fat loss and overall health. Today, I’m stronger than I was in my twenties, proving that our bodies are capable of remarkable transformations when we fuel them properly and challenge them in new ways.
Balancing teaching, parenting, and personal fitness during midlife isn’t always easy, but it’s taught me that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. I’ve learned that sustainable fat loss and getting in shape after 40 requires a different approach than what worked in our twenties.
Whether I’m advocating for my students, cheering on my kids, or pushing through a challenging workout, I’ve discovered that the key to thriving in midlife is embracing change, prioritizing strength over the scale, and showing up consistently for yourself—even when hormones and life make it feel impossible.
