A Day Trip to Nantucket

FAMILY TRAVEL, PARENTING

Last Friday we headed out on a whirlwind day trip to Nantucket . We left out of Hyannis on the Steamship Authority high speed ferry, so it was a short 1 hour trip! Originally we had decided to leave on the 8:15 a.m. boat, but thankfully logic prevailed and I switched the reservation to the 11:00 a.m. boat.

We left on a Friday, so we missed out on parking right next to the ferry, but we were just a short shuttle ride away from the Yarmouth Road lot. You get to board first when you have a bike or a stroller, so we were the first on, and the kids couldn’t have been more excited! 🙂 If you live in the Northeast corridor, the comparison between the regular Steamship Authority boat to Nantucket and their high speed ferry is kind of like the Amtrak regional to NYC and the Acela.

After boarding the ferry, we picked a nice table with bench seating, so we could all sit together. We hit up the snack bar for some eats. I love that they had a lot of healthy options like fruit cups, yogurt, hummus and pretzels, etc. 🙂 They also have wine and mixed drinks if you are feeling a little frazzled after making the ferry! 😉

We arrived in Nantucket shortly after noon and decided to walk and shop for a bit before heading to lunch down by the water at the Tavern at Harbor Square. It was a warm and sunny day, so it was actually nice to dine on the upper level–there was more of a breeze.

Clarke decided to take the boys to the playground at Children’s Beach, (where he got to meet up with a college friend who lives on the island!) while my mother, my aunt, and I got to go shopping! 🙂 We spent about an hour and a half perusing the many stores of downtown Nantucket. There are so many cute shops in downtown Nantucket, but be prepared to bring some major cash, because items are pricey!

When we had finished shopping, we headed over for some homemade ice cream from the Juice Bar. If you are in downtown Nantucket, their ice cream is AWESOME. Bring cash because they don’t take debit cards. They also make phenomenal smoothies!

We did some souvenir shopping at Four Winds and then headed back on the 6:00 p.m. ferry– enjoying a cocktail on the ride! It was a beautiful day to travel over and we had a great ride on the fast ferry! I would definitely recommend it for your trip over.
